Transit Camp: May 30th

Thanks to the urging and enthusiasm of active citizens and local Twitter personalities @camlinke and @mastermaq, my office is helping to organize Edmonton’s first ever TransitCamp next month.

As with most “unconferences” there will be opportunities for attendees to present and the sessions will be very dialogue oriented. ETS and Tranportation Department Planners will make some presentations, but this is a community-led event and they are as much there to listen.  I appreciate the open-mindedness City Administration has shown and think it will be a great afternoon for both the public and our civil servants.

Below are the preliminary details; more to follow as we nail down some really neat pending presentations.

  1. I would love to attend and take part in a rational debate. My real fear is that LRT planning has been reduced to social engineering. We all know that there is a vocal element that wants to turn this into a debate about TOD’s, and punishing those that don’t live in them, having neighbourhoods on a ‘human scale’, and being responsible to ‘human truth’ (whatever that means).

I just want to talk about meat and potato kind of issues, particularly about existing service to the west end and west LRT development. Will I be welcome to talk about these things, or will it require an accompanying social agenda?

I’m not trying to be mean or condescending. If you say you’re open to all opinions, I’m there.

    Thanks

  2. Yes, Dave. All opinions are welcome. The group self-moderates – it’s not at all top down or prescribed beyond the general topic of transit in Edmonton. Perhaps you can explain your ‘human truth’ comment this weekend as well.
